Resize image for Instagram: exact dimensions for feed, stories and reels

Instagram accepts images in multiple aspect ratios, but automatically resizes any file sent outside the target dimensions. When Instagram resizes your image, it applies its own compression — which can degrade quality and introduce artifacts. Sending at the correct dimension from the start avoids this problem and ensures the image is displayed exactly as you planned.

Recommended dimensions for each Instagram format

  • Square feed (1:1): 1080×1080 px — the classic and most compatible format. Portrait feed (4:5): 1080×1350 px — takes more space in the feed and has better engagement rate. Landscape feed (1.91:1): 1080×566 px — useful for banners and panoramic images. Instagram automatically crops to these ratios if the uploaded image has a different ratio.
  • Stories and Reels: 1080×1920 px (9:16). This is the full-screen vertical ratio that fills the entire smartphone display. Important content should stay in the safe zone — the top and bottom 20% are often covered by app interface elements.
  • Instagram compresses all images during upload. To minimize degradation, always upload JPEG at 85–90% or high-quality PNG. WebP is not accepted for direct Instagram upload — the platform performs the conversion internally.

Full tool FAQ

Resizing changes the dimensions of the entire image — it becomes larger or smaller, but the content is preserved in full (possibly distorted if the aspect ratio changes). Cropping selects a specific region and eliminates the rest — the resulting dimensions are exactly those of the selected area.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo look blurry on Instagram even at high resolution?

Instagram applies additional compression during upload, regardless of the quality of the submitted image. To minimize blurriness: upload at the exact expected resolution (without letting Instagram resize), use JPEG at 85–90% (excessively low compression does not help and may confuse the app's re-compression algorithm), and make sure the image is sufficiently sharp before uploading.

What is the difference between resizing and cropping for Instagram?

Resizing changes the dimensions while keeping the entire image — it may introduce black bars if the ratio does not match, or distortion if the ratio is not maintained. Cropping selects a region of the image with the correct ratio and discards the rest — it is the preferred method for distortion-free results.
