About ITIN

Synthetic ITINs should reflect tax purpose, not broad identity.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is issued by IRS to people who need a U.S. federal tax ID and are not eligible for an SSN. This tool only generates synthetic test-format values using the 9 prefix and recognized groups.

How to use

Test tax flows without mixing in real personal data.

  1. Generate an ITIN and inspect the area, group and serial parts.
  2. Copy the hyphenated form for UI tests or raw digits for integrations.
  3. Do not use it for work authorization, immigration, credit or real verification.

What an ITIN does not do

According to IRS, ITIN is for federal tax purposes. It does not qualify someone for Social Security benefits, authorize work or serve as identification outside the federal tax system.

That limitation should appear in tests and documentation to avoid incorrect semantics.

  • Starts with 9.
  • Valid groups: 70–88, 90–92 or 94–99.
  • No IRS lookup.
